Tulip Glass Pendant Lamp
J.T. Kalmar Franken Tulip glass pendant lamp from the 1960s. A fantastic design from the famous “glass period”. Made in Austria with 41 glass shades. The lamp can be hung from the ceiling or mounted on a wall. The stem can be shortened with a cord. The lamp has 41 glass shades with smoked glass inserts in the fittings, with the lowest shade hanging from its own ring. The frame is made of metal, while the stem and ceiling canopy are made of brass. All the glass shades are in good condition, with only a few minor nicks at the edges. The lamp is 100% original and fully functional. In very good vintage condition, with normal signs of use consistent with its age. It comes with 4 metres of new wire, a small amount of wear and tear, and a UK plug.

A bit of history:
The Beginning
Founded in Vienna by Julius August Kalmar in 1881, Kalmar initially specialised in producing handcrafted objects in cast bronze. The company soon established itself by collaborating with leading architects to create lighting fixtures and decorative objects in brass, bronze and glass.
By 1931, Kalmar focused exclusively on the design and production of high-quality interiors in collaboration with the Wiener Werkbund, an association of artists, craftsmen, architects and manufacturers founded in 1912. The company was particularly renowned for its expertise in materials, form and functional craftsmanship and industrial production of art and everyday objects. Kalmar sought modernity by combining classical tradition with contemporary innovation.
Recognised as a characteristic example of 1930s Viennese style, the company demonstrated what might be described as “moderate modernity”, making optimal use of materials and meticulous detailing to achieve maximum effect.
The Post-War Period
The Kalmar name became associated with high-quality modern design, and J.T. Kalmar established himself as a leading “mid-century” lighting designer. The company designed and produced lighting fixtures for leading Austrian architects and designers, including Josef Frank and Oskar Wlach, as well as Oswald Haerdtl, Clemens Holzmeister, Oswald Haerdtl, Ernst Plischke and others.
In the 1960s, Rudolf Calice, an external designer at Laaer Calice-Kalmar and later at J.T. Kalmar, worked together with the company’s master craftsmen to create a series of highly decorative ceiling lights. These later became known as Kalmar’s glass period and significantly increased demand for the company’s products.
