Murano spiral glass is created through a traditional and time-consuming process in which skilled glassmakers create unique pieces of glass in Murano, Italy. The process combines craftsmanship, artistic creativity and the use of specialised techniques.
- Melting the glass: The process begins with raw materials such as sand, soda and limestone being melted in furnaces at extremely high temperatures, typically around 1,400°C. Glassmakers add metal oxides and other materials to create the desired colours and compositions for each unique design.
- Forming the spiral: When the glass is molten, the glassmaker uses tools or moulds to shape it. The molten glass is manipulated while it is still hot, using specialised tools and techniques to create the characteristic spiral form.
- Adding details: To enhance the transparent and white effects, the glassmaker combines coloured glass layers or individual glass elements while the glass is still warm and being shaped.
- Annealing: Once the spiral has been formed, the glass is placed in an annealing oven. The temperature is gradually reduced over several hours or days to relieve internal stresses and make the glass more durable.
- Finishing: Finally, the glassmaker polishes, grinds and finishes the glass to enhance its details and create a smooth, glossy surface that strengthens its aesthetic appeal.
