A bit of history:
Hermann Kaiser founded Kaiser Leuchten (Gebr. Kaiser & Co. Leuchten KG) in 1895. The company originally produced lighting fixtures for use in petroleum lamps, cooking products and ovens. As the transition to electric lighting began, Kaiser focused on producing components for electric lamps.
First World War
After the First World War, the company expanded its production of electrical lighting fixtures and gradually shifted its focus entirely to this field. Between the two world wars, the company established itself as one of the largest lighting manufacturers in Germany. During this period, it was known for its functional desk lamps designed by Christian Dell, who produced under the Kaiser name from the 1930s to the 1980s. The range also included a number of other lamps, including the iconic Kaiser 6551 spring-balanced desk lamp.
Second World War
By 1934, the company already employed around 350 people. It later grew to between 600 and 700 employees as the Second World War approached. However, the Second World War had a significant impact on the company. Some of its production facilities were completely destroyed during the war, partly as a result of the Möhne dam disaster in 1943. By the late 1970s, the company was acquired by the Thorn Lighting Group. In 1993, it was subsequently taken over by an international investment company, and the remaining production was eventually relocated to Dortmund in 2000. Today, the Kaiser Idell brand belongs to the Danish furniture manufacturer Fritz Hansen A/S.
