German Space Age Design
Space Age brass ceiling lamp from the 1960s with 13 white spherical glass globes. The frame is made of white-painted metal, while the fittings for the glass globes are made of brass with an anodised copper finish. Made in Germany. A fantastic Atomic Age design from the 1960s that provides a soft and diffused light. The thirteen E14 sockets are rated for bulbs up to 40W each. A bit of history:
Space Age design is a collective term for design movements that emerged during the Cold War, when concerns about nuclear weapons dominated Western society. At the same time, there was widespread optimism and confidence in technological progress. From the launch of Sputnik in 1957 to the Moon landing in 1969, architecture, industrial design, commercial design, including advertising, interior design and the visual arts all reflected themes inspired by space exploration and the Atomic Age.
Space Age design quickly became popular and immediately recognisable, with frequent use of atomic motifs and symbols associated with rockets and outer space. Geometric atomic patterns and star and galaxy motifs became characteristic of the period, alongside streamlined and futuristic forms.
There are clear similarities between Space Age design and the mid-century modern trends of the same period. Elements of Space Age design came to dominate the so-called Googie design movement in American commercial architecture. Some of the streamlined and futuristic forms associated with Space Age design also drew inspiration from earlier Art Deco designs.
