A bit of history:
Hermann Kaiser founded Kaiser Leuchten (Gebr. Kaiser & Co. Leuchten KG) in 1895. The company originally produced kerosene lamps, cookware and other household products. As electric lighting became increasingly widespread, Kaiser shifted its focus towards producing components for electric lamps.
First World War
After the First World War, the company expanded its production of electric lighting fixtures and gradually became one of Germany’s leading lighting manufacturers. During the interwar period, the company became particularly well known for its functional desk lamps designed by Christian Dell, which were produced under the Kaiser Idell name from the 1930s through the 1980s. During this period, a number of other lamps were also developed, including the Kaiser Idell Model 6551 desk lamp.
Second World War
By 1934, the company already employed around 350 people. The workforce had grown to between 600 and 700 employees by the outbreak of the Second World War. During the war, the company’s production facilities were largely destroyed, partly as a result of the Möhne Dam disaster in 1943. Towards the end of the war, the company resumed production and continued to operate in the post-war period. In 1993, Kaiser was acquired by an international investment company, and production was subsequently moved to Dortmund in 2000. Today, the Kaiser Idell brand belongs to the Danish furniture manufacturer Fritz Hansen A/S.
