After World War II, in a time marked by shortage of raw materials in Italy, Gucci had to find new solutions. The artisans turned to bamboo – a material that was both durable and lightweight – and created a design element that would later become one of the brand’s most recognizable hallmarks.
The bamboo handle is formed through an advanced process in which the material is heated and bent by hand. Multiple layers of lacquer are then applied before it is cured, resulting in the characteristic smooth surface and warm, golden-brown tone.
